2403 | Virginia Elizabeth Burkett Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Elizabeth Burkett, 74, are 1 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2004 at the Chapel of Dickson Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Larkin of Calvary United Pentecostal Church-Charlotte officiating. Visitation is Saturday, March 13, 2004 from 1 to 8 p.m. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery on Woods Valley Road. Mrs. Burkett, of Cumberland Furnace, was born on May 26, 1929 in Tipton County, Tenn. She died on March 6, 2004 at Dickson County Nursing Home. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her two sons, Ronald Burkett of Cumberland Furnace and Dan Burkett of Red Bud, Ill.; one brother, James Armstrong of Sikeston, Mo.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 2404 | VIRGINIA FORBIS SIMONTON, a descendant of the earlier settlers of Shelby, Tipton and Carroll counties, was born in Memphis on June 9, 1921 to Joseph McLeskey and Allene Walker Forbis. A graduate of Memphis Central High, she attended Bethel College and was a graduate from Memphis State University where she was an officer in Alpha Beta Pi on the Pan-Hellinic Council and a member of the English majors club. She married John Will Simonton, Jr. on January 23, 1944. To their union were born John W. Simonton, III of Denver, Colorado and the late Joseph Forbis Simonton. Following 11 years as a fulltime homemaker, she worked for several years at Fireman's Fund Insurance. Then she began a career in education, first as a teacher at Graceland School and Hillcrest High School. After receiving a master's degree from Memphis State University and membership in Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, she served as a guidance counselor at Central High. Selected as a member of Delta Kamma Gamma teacher's honor society, she entered school administration at Overton High School and was retired 13 years later from Hillcrest High School. After that time she enjoyed time with her grandchildren, Jennifer Simonton and John Simonton IV. She also enjoyed studying genealogy and writing several family histories. She wrote a history of her church, Eastside Cumberland Presbyterian, which was published. She was selected for perpetual membership in the Cumberland Presbyterian Women. Later she served as an elder and trustee in Cordova Presbyterian Church and as moderator of the Presbyterian Women. She was honored with a life membership. In more recent years she united with Buntyn Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to her husband, son and grandchildren, she leaves four great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m., Friday, November 16 at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with interment to follow in the family lot in Memorial Park Cemetery of Memphis. 2412 | W.W McQuiston 81 Retired Farmer William Wilson McQuiston,81, died at his home on the Florence Road Friday Afternoon. He was a native of Drew County and a retired farmer. He was born December 30, 1879, the son of the late John Hemphill McQuiston and Addie Lou Moore McQuistion and on November 9,1909 was married to the former Carlee Hoover. he was a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his widow: three sons, J.A. McQuiston of McGehee, William McQuiston of Monticello, and Robert McQuiston of Chicago; for Daughters, Mrs. Agnes Henry and Mrs Hazel Saffold or Monticello, Mrs Lille V Rothenberger of Shreveport La and Mrs Thelma Tucker of Memphis; two half-sisters Mrs Maggie Owens of Monticello and Mrs Mary Tucker of Dumas; a half-brothers, G.C. "Buck" Pevey of Monticello; 23 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Funeral service were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Stephenson Funeral Chapel by Dr. Thomas Welch and Rev Dale Genty. Burial was at camp Ground Cemetery. Active pallbearers were his grandsons: Billy Gene Henry, Tom Henry, Kenneth Saffold, Jerry Tucker, Jimmy Potter and LaVern Baker. He was a member of the Tipton Masonic Lodge and a Navy veteran.
