564 Buck was born in Catahoula Parish January 23, 1863. He died at home at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 1931 of complications from the flu (possibly congestive heart failure). He was adamant that no religious services be held as he had "fallen out" with the Methodist Church when they "churched" his wife, Mollie, for dancing. His body was laid out at home, and the services were held there as conducted be "his Lodge Members"(?). He is buried in the American Cemetery at Natchitoches, Louisiana. Buck served as Chief Deputy Sheriff of Natchitoches Parish for 31 years. In his later years, he also served in the position of Jailer. Someone who also worked at the Courthouse remarked that he always knew when Mr. Buck was coming because he could hear that big ring of keys jingling. Upon his death the key to the jail was presented." His family remembers him coming home each evening, riding his horse up the sandy road. Once there, he would unbuckle his holster and put his gun up on the mantel. No one even thought of touching it. He was well known throughout the community as a "comforter", and was frequently called to the bedsides of the sick and dying. He was also noted for his wry sense of humor. FORD, Thomas Washington “Buck” (I1043)
