2152 Sarah Wooten Gordon
Date of Death – July 16, 2012

Sarah Wooten “Gan” Gordon , beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt died July 21, 2012 after a brief illness. She was born in Munford, August 28, 1925 to the late Elbert Henry Wooten, Sr. and Mary Emma Witherington Wooten, as the youngest of nine children. Her brothers were all farmers and businessmen twelve or more years her senior. Sarah graduated from Munford High School and then Sullins College, in Bristol, Virginia. In 1948, she met and married the love of her life the late LCDR Erving Lawrence “Larry” Gordon, a Naval Aviator stationed at the Millington Naval Base. Together they moved across the country several times until Larry’s final duty station returned them to Millington. In 1960, they returned to Munford and built a house across the street from her childhood home. Throughout her life, Sarah had a strong intellectual curiosity. She was a voracious reader and collector of books, especially cookbooks, which she studied relentlessly. Two of her many passions were cooking and entertaining. She served as a substitute teacher at Munford High School, while actively participating in the Tipton Rosemark Academy Parents Association. Simultaneously, she served as the bookkeeper for the Wooten Brothers Feed Mill. Later, she opened and operated her own antique store. She also got her real estate license and sold real estate with Park Field Real Estate, Larry’s business. Although her family was her first priority, she had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and loved. Her sense of community was tireless. She was generous with her time, talent, and resources. Wherever she perceived a need she would contribute in any way she could. She was a lifelong member of the Munford Presbyterian Church. Sarah also loved to travel and in later years as her physical condition kept her from going great distances, she could frequently be spotted on the streets of Munford being chauffeured by one of her caregivers. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, James, Bill, June, Jack, Robert, Dan, Paul, sister, Mary Emaline, husband, Larry, and grandson, Austin Gordon. She is survived by her children, Meg McGill (Sherman) of Munford and Dr. Lance Gordon (Sandy) of Germantown, TN. She is survived by her grandchildren: Dr. Katie McGill, Erin McGill, Seth McGill (Lindsay), Ethan Gordon, and Laura Gordon and a great-grandson, Tate McGill. She is also survived by her loving caregivers: Kathy Doss, Patricia Murphy, Barbara Wiles, Polly Beasley, Brenda McCarley, and Judy Loper. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 24 at Munford Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. The funeral will be Wednesday, July 25 at Munford Funeral Home at 11 a.m., with burial at the Helen Crigger Cemetery in Munford, TN. Memorial donations can be made to Methodist Hospital Hospice Program, Mid-South Food Bank, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Restoration Church or a charity of your choice.
