This would indicate that John was in South Carolina in 1778. In the Oct Court
of 1788 in York Co, John appeared as Grand Jury member acting on the
Administration of an Estate (not connected to the Simontons). On 8 Nov 1792 a
deed of conveyance of land to John Simonton of York Co was recorded as shown in
"Some South Carolina County Records vol 2, by the Rev Sias Emmett Lucas
Jr.These records would indicate that John Simonton arrived in York Co before
1778 and was there until 1792 when he bought land in Chester Co South
Carolina.
Named as co-executor to his brother-in-law Robert Strong's estate.
He lived in that section until 1798 when he moved down into Fairfield Co.
A portion of his York Co. land was sold to Andrew Tipping in 1799, the
last conveyance of this land was to Robert Caughran on May 26, 1799. The

He was wounded and confined in the home of Charles Strong and nursed by
his daughter, Margaret, whom John Simonton afterward married.

John was born in Pennsylvania in 1760 and was the first settler of the name in South Carolina. Duriong the War of the Revolution, he left Pennsylvania, accompanying a brother with Green's Army.
Robert was not a brother but a great Uncle. Robert Simonton had land in York District since 1750-54 and he probably let John Stay on this land when John came to South Carolina. When he reached South Carolina he went at once to the Gastons and the Strongs, who were his kinfolks, and who were then settled in York District SC. With these he took part in the Partissan warfare which desolated upper Carolina. At the close of the war, about 1783 or 1784,he married Margaret Strong, who was a daughter of Jeannette Gaston. They had seven sons and five daughters. John Simonton died January 31, 1841, in his 81st year. He was a life long member of teh Associate Reformend Presbyterian Church, and for many years a Ruling Elder. Of the children of John Simonton, Robert, Charles, William and John lived to full age. Christopher, Alexander and James died under age. Of his daughters, Martha died under age. Margaret married Robert Brice and had a large family. One of his daughteres married David A Hemphill and their daughter daughter Margare married J. Lucas Gaston, a brother of Dr. J. McF. Gaston of Atlanta. Mary Simonton married William brice and had a large family. Jeannette Simonton Married Alexander Douglass. Sarah married Wilson. These also had large families.
William Simoton and Robert Simonton (sons of John) migrated to West Tennessee in early life, and their descendents now are in that State and in Mississippi. A son of William Simonton, by name Charles B. Simonton, served several terms in Congress and was U.S. Attorney for some years ( the author of this information)
John Simonton (son of John) remained at the Homestead and died at an advanced age, leaviing descendants who live in SC and in Florida.
This John Simonton did not inherit any land from Robert Simonton from NC because there are records that Robert's land in SC was sold to another party in 1788 just before Robert died in NC.
