  "Miss Mary" was born to William Little Patterson and Nancy "Nannie" Rosanna Boyd. She taught school, and became the Principal of Eureka School, in which all grades were taught. She was a lifelong Presbyterian, and assisted her father with his work as a minister, reading scriptures to him and assisting him with his sermons when his eyes failed.
