Deceased Name: Times Herald travel editor David Carrington dies
David L. Carrington, former Dallas Times Herald travel editor, died Sept. 25 of a heart attack while visiting his family in Collierville, Tenn.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 28 for Mr. Carrington, 71, in Collierville, where he was buried in Magnolia Cemetery.
Born in Cayce, Miss., Mr. Carrington attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
Mr. Carrington was decorated for his service in Italy and Austria for the U.S. Army during World War II, said his companion of 44 years, Dr. H.H. Johns of Dallas.
After the war, Mr. Carrington graduated from the Parson School of Design in New York and studied voice in Memphis, Tenn., where he also performed in summer musicals, Dr. Johns said.
In 1952, Mr. Carrington moved to Dallas, where he started a long career in the travel industry as a ticket agent for American Airlines at the Baker Hotel. He became manager of the Ask Mr. Foster Tourist Agency in the A. Harris Building in downtown Dallas.
With expertise gathered at the travel agency, he became minister of the Bahamas Bureau of Tourism in Dallas, Dr. Johns said. "He stayed there a long time," Dr. Johns said. "It was quite an exciting time in his career."
For 12 years, Mr. Carrington was travel editor of the Times Herald, where he was awarded the Quality Courts Holiday Award for the nation's outstanding travel editor, Dr. Johns said.
Mr. Carrington was a regular member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dallas. He also maintained a home in Collierville.
Mr. Carrington is survived by two sisters, Louise Ward and Elizabeth Kelsey; and a brother, Richard Carrington, all of Collierville.
