Mrs. Boyd, 90, of Timber Lane and the Carriage Club died November 13, 2003 at Presbyterian Hospital. Born February 19, 1913, in Mooresville, NC, USA, Mrs. Boyd was the daughter of the late Harriet Harvell Brantley and John Bell Brantley, and the wife of the late John Edward Boyd. She was also predeceased by her sister, Ellen B. Heath, and by brothers and sister-in-law, E.J. Heath, Col. Lawrence and Sara Boyd.
Growing up in the Fourth Ward section of Charlotte, Mrs. Boyd graduated from Central High School and from Woman's College (UNC-G), which she attended on academic scholarship. While there she was active in student government, played tennis, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation, she taught school in High Point until her 1940 marriage to her lifelong friend, John E. Boyd.
Mrs. Boydwas active as a substitute teacher, PTA officer, and scout leader. She served as a Presbyterian Hospital volunteer for more than thirty years. She was very active in her churches, Tenth Avenue and Sardis Presbyterian, and was awarded a life membership in the Women of the Church.
Mrs. Boyd was known for her gentleness, her genuine concern for others, and her insistence on being 'useful.' A strong belief in God was her cornerstone, and she lived what she believed. She was generous with her time and resources. She greeted everyone she encountered with her radiant smile, and she was adored by her family, who learned much from her example.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Louis Abernathy of Matthews; her grandchildren, Mary and Phillip Duncan of Charlotte; John and Tonya Abernathy of Weddington; Dr. Elizabeth Abernathy of Chapel Hill; and Laura Abernathy of Raleigh; her great-granddaughters, Ashley and Katie Duncan; and her lifelong dear friends, Helen Boyd McConnell, Melba R. Moore and Frances H. Fort. She was also looking forward to the birth in February, of a new great-granddaughter, to be named Anna Abernathy.
A memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Boyd's life will be held on Monday, November 17, at 11:00 a.m. at Sardis Presbyterian Church with Dr. Tom Kort, Dr. Jane Fobel, and the Reverend Alice Johnson officiating.
