VIRGINIA KELSEY CARRINGTON, of Collierville, TN, died on July 31, 2012, in Birmingham, AL, where she had resided for the last six years. Mrs. Carrington was born on September 27, 1915, in Collierville, TN. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Hicks Carrington, her parents, Mattie McDonald Kelsey and Hardin Franklin Kelsey, and brothers, Hardin Franklin Kelsey, Jr., Dr. Richard Forrest Kelsey, and James Thomas Kelsey, Sr. Mrs. Carrington was a graduate of Collierville High School and Memphis State Teachers College (Univ. of Memphis) with majors in three subjects. She was a lifelong active member of Collierville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Carrington was a member of the Contemporary Club, served on the boards of the Collierville Library and Magnolia Cemetery. She was instrumental in researching and writing a compilation of historic homes of Collierville, some of which became the text for the Contemporary Club publication, Collierville, A Place Called Home. An avid bridge player and a voracious reader, she frequently read a book a night. She enjoyed history and could recall past and current events. She made beautiful cut-work tablecloths, afghans, samplers, and knit hats for the homeless. For many years, Mrs. Carrington and her husband owned and operated Kelsey Brothers Department Store on the Square in Collierville. Mrs. Carrington is survived by two daughters: Carole Ann Carrington Moorer (Robert E.) of Birmingham, AL, Virginia (Ginger) Kelsey Carrington Magruder (T. Daniell, Jr.) of Ocean Springs, MS; four grandchildren: Mary Virginia Moorer Gardner (Scott), Robert Carrington Moorer (Lynn) of Birmingham, AL, Thomas D. Magruder, III, (Lori) of Austin, TX, Ann Kelsey Magruder of Ocean Springs, MS; great-grandchildren: Virginia Reaves Gardner, John William Lawson Gardner, Elijah Cowan Moorer, Kelsey McCarley Moorer, Robert Price Moorer, Birmingham, AL, McIntosh Daniell Magruder, Adrian Bae Magruder, Wills Carrington Magruder, Austin, TX. Funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Collierville United Methodist Church, Sanctuary on the Square, 104 N. Rowlett, with burial following in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, August 2, from 5-7 p.m. at Collierville Funeral Home, 534 West Poplar, Collierville, TN. The family requests that memorials be made to the Sanctuary on the Square Fund, Collierville United Methodist Church, 454 W. Poplar Ave., Collierville, TN, 38017 or a favorite charity.
